
Yesterday I had a very nice meal of roasted Brussels sprouts and sweet potato tots. The tots were not made from scratch — Alexa organic frozen heated in the oven — but they were still nice.
There’s a joke on Twitter from a Brit. Something about Christmas without the Brussels. I can’t tell whether the OP thought it was funny or not. In order to get that joke, as an American, you may need some or all of the following tips:
- Brits are insanely loyal to traditions whether they like them or not. Over 90% of British people have brussels sprouts for their Christmas dinner even though only about 40% can even tolerate them.
- Brits shorten everything. Brussels sprouts are usually called “sprouts” but occasionally called “Brussels.”
- The EU headquarters being in Brussels, it’s not unheard of for “Brussels” to be used as shorthand for the EU.
- So, yeah, this is a joke about Brexit. Which is itself a joke, but not funny.
I only ate half the brussels sprouts I made yesterday; that was by design.
